Women's Soccer Signs Three to NLIs

Feb. 11, 2004

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University women's soccer head coach Jerry Smith announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent this past week. Joining the Broncos this fall are Jordan Angeli of Lakewood, Colo., Brittany Klein of Arcadia, and Meagan Snell of Arroyo Grande.

"In this year's class, we weren't looking for quantity of players as much as we were looking for quality in a few key spots," Smith explained. "Our roster this past fall was huge and with only losing four seniors, we had limited roster positions available. What we were looking for most we found in Brittany, Jordan and Meagan. They all have great versatility that will help us out immediately."

Angeli will be reunited with former Green Mountain High School teammate and current Bronco Marian Dalmy when she arrives on the mission campus. Angeli was a team captain that led her team to the Jefferson County League Championships and the state finals in 2002. As a club member for the Colorado Rush, Angeli won the 2001 U15 National Championship and also brings national team experience as an Olympic Development Program team member.

"Jordan is a player with a lot of versatility," Smith said. "She is two-footed, athletic and heads the ball well. She will probably play on our back line, but she can play at midfield as well. If Jordan plays in the back for us, she would be very comfortable going forward and contributing to what we do offensively."

Klein also has a wealth of experience, as she is a member of the U17 National Team. She is the 2003 Gatorade California High School Girls Soccer Player of the Year and is also a two-time NSCAA All-American who has won a national championship with the Laguna Hills Eclipse Club team.

"Brittany is the prototypical SCU midfielder," Smith continued. "Very skillful and tactically aware, meaning she's a wonderful student of the game and brings great vision. She's in the mold of many of our past play-making attacking midfielders, like an Aly Wagner... able to spin the ball and curve the ball, and thread needle-type passes. Brittany will ultimately be one of the best passers in college soccer."

Snell plays at Arroyo Grande High School, where she led her team to the CIF playoffs last season. She plays club for Futbol Club Santa Barbara and was named her team's 2002 Player of the Year. Snell was also a standout performer on the cross country and track & field teams.

"Megan will be our utility player, as she can play anywhere," he continued. "I have no idea where that will be at this point, but she will play for us as a freshman. She reminds me of one of our current Broncos, Bree Horvath: quick, tough and versatile."

Santa Clara advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2003 NCAA Tournament, falling to eventual champion North Carolina. The Broncos played arguably one of the toughest schedules in the country, and won their third straight West Coast Conference Championship. The Broncos were led by All-Americans Leslie Osborne and Julie Ryder.
