Women's Soccer Closes Spring Season

May 21, 2004

STANFORD, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's soccer team concluded its spring season schedule with a 1-1 draw against Stanford Wednesday night in Palo Alto.

Redshirt freshman defender Bonnie Bowman scored in the first half to give the Broncos an early lead. Junior forward Megan Kakadelas started the play, making a great run and serving the ball to freshman forward Tina Estrada. Estrada then crossed the ball to Bowman, who took one touch and then scored.

The match also saw sophomore Kelly Giddings return to the field after a one-year hiatus. Giddings red-shirted the 2003 fall season after injuring her knee in a spring match against the Cardinal last year. She saw about 25 minutes of action in her return.

Sophomore Michaela Esquivel, a midfielder/defender, was also credited with a strong performance.

Santa Clara recently released the 2004 fall schedule, which features 10 programs that advanced to last year's NCAA Championship, including three of the top eight seeds. For the first time since 1992, the Broncos will open the fall season with seven straight road contests, kicking off at Cal Poly on Friday, August 27 at 7 p.m.

Santa Clara returns a core of experienced returnees to the 2004 team, led by seven seniors: All-American and 2003 WCC Player of the Year Leslie Osborne, All-WCC forwards Kakadelas and Bree Horvath, defenders Jessica Ballweg, Lana Bowen and Monika Sola, and goalkeeper Alyssa Sobolik.
