Soccer Buzz Rates SCU's Recruiting Class 15th

NEW YORK - The Santa Clara University women's soccer team has recruited the 15th best class in the nation, according to Soccer Buzz magazine, in its annual rankings released Thursday.

Texas A&M was tabbed by the magazine with the top class in the country, followed by Notre Dame, North Carolina, Penn State and Texas. The top 10 is rounded out as follows: Clemson, West Coast Conference opponent Portland, Maryland, Ohio State and Bay Area rival California. Ahead of Santa Clara in the 11-14 spots are Villanova, Virginia, Michigan and Illinois. The complete top 25 list can be view at SoccerBuzz.com.

Santa Clara will aim for its 10th overall appearance in the College Cup with the start of the 2004 season. The 20-match slate features 10 programs that advanced to last year's NCAA Championship, including three of the top eight seeds. For the first time since 1992, the Broncos will open the season with seven straight road contests. The 2004 schedule will kick off at Cal Poly on Friday, August 27 at 7 p.m. and then move on to tournaments at Notre Dame, Rutgers and Stanford. Santa Clara will open the home season with the ninth annual Santa Clara/adidas Classic on Sept. 24 and 26, which annually features some of the nation's finest teams. This year, the Broncos will host Stanford, Marquette and Denver, with the Cardinal making its sixth trip to the Classic. The Golden Eagles and the Pioneers will be making their first appearance at the event.
