Five Former Broncos Named to the National Team Training Camp Roster

Aug. 20, 2003

Four Santa Clara Broncos will report to the Women's National Team Training Camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in San Diego, Calif., on Thursday as the Americans begin the final preparations for the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup. Brandi Chastain, Devvyn Hawkins, Danielle Slaton and Aly Wagner are four among the 23 players announced by the U.S. Women's National Team head coach April Heinrichs.

Former Santa Clara Bronco Kylie Bivens was also named to the roster and will continue practice with the Atlanta Beat as they prepare for the Founders Cup Championship game on August 24 at Torero Stadium in San Diego against the Washington Freedom.

History will remember 2003 as a historic one for the United States, as the U.S. Women's National Team competes in the fourth Women's World Cup in the program's history, and the first in the WUSA era. After guiding the team successfully through Women's World Cup qualifying at the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup in October 2002, Heinrichs will lead the team in her first Women's World Cup as a head coach.

The first U.S. match is to be played against Sweden at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. on September 21 at 9:30 a.m. Pacific.

The U.S. then take on Nigeria on September 25 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa., at 4:30 p.m. Their final match before the quarterfinals is scheduled for September 28 against Korea DPR at the Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio at 10:00 a.m.

Heinrichs has yet not announced the date she will name the 2003 Women's World Cup Team.
