CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Santa Clara University women's soccer team fell to 15th-ranked Virginia 4-1 this evening at Klöckner Stadium as part of the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. It was the Broncos' first defeat of the season, as the team's record moves to 2-1-2. The Cavaliers improve to 3-1-1.

Santa Clara took the early lead, in the 33rd minute on a breakaway goal by junior forward Megan Kakadelas. Junior defender Jessica Ballweg assisted on the play.

Virginia countered just four minutes later when substitute Shannon Foley found Noelle Keselica with a through ball to even the match score. The Cavaliers took the lead in the second half, when Kelly Hammond scored her third goal of the season in the 56th minute.

The game was put out of reach for the Broncos in the 75th minute, when Virginia scored two goals in a 49-second span. Ariel Thompson scored both, the first a tap-in, the second a breakaway.

The Broncos were outhot 14-7 by the Cavaliers.

Santa Clara will remain at the Classic and play seventh-ranked Penn State on Sunday. The Nittany Lions, a 2002 College Cup participant, has only played against SCU on one other occasion, also in the Tournament, a second round Bronco victory in 1996. The match will mark the Broncos' fourth ranked opponent in their first six matches.
