Women's Soccer Opens WCC Season with `W'

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 13th-ranked Santa Clara University women's soccer team shut out its fourth opponent in the past five matches, with a 3-0 victory over San Diego this afternoon at Torero Stadium. The contest opened the 12th West Coast Conference season, and the victory moved the Broncos to an overall 7-3-4 record, 1-0 in the WCC. San Diego fell to 6-4-3, 0-1.

The Broncos are now 10-2-0 against the Toreros all-time, and notched their fourth straight shutout over USD, which also marked the seventh consecutive victory for Santa Clara in the series.

Freshman Tiffany Roberts scored the game-winner in the 64th minute, heading a cross from fellow freshman Tina Estrada.

The Broncos put the match away in an eventful 87th minute, as the team scored two goals 49 seconds apart. Junior forwards Bree Horvath and Megan Kakadelas connected at 86:04 for the 2-0 lead and then at 86:53, Horvath found senior forward Kristi Candau for the Broncos' final tally.

Freshman goalkeeper Julie Ryder posted two saves in her fourth shut out of the season. USD netminder Libby Bassett notched seven for the Toreros.

The Broncos out-shot San Diego by a 17-4 margin.

The Broncos return home for two of their three final home matches of the regular season, hosting Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in continuing West Coast Conference action. Santa Clara leads both series: 8-2-0 against the Lions and 7-2-0 against the Waves. Pepperdine is currently ranked 13th nationally and is the defending league champions.
