Women's Soccer Falls at No. 2 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The fourth-ranked Santa Clara University women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2004 season, falling to second-ranked Notre Dame 5-2 this afternoon to close participation at the Notre Dame Classic at Alumni Field in South Bend, Ind. The Broncos' record falls to 1-1-1 while the Fighting Irish improve to 4-0-0. The Broncos' offense started early, with three shots in the first five minutes. Sophomore Tina Estrada and senior Leslie Osborne recorded headers, while sophomore Marian Dalmy added an attempt. Notre Dame scored in the 39th minute. Jen Buczkowski notched her third goal on the season with a shot from the box. Katie Thorlakson assisted on the play. Santa Clara opened the second half with three corner kicks, but could not convert. The Broncos kept trying and did answer with a goal in the 64th minute. Freshman Jordan Angeli found Estrada in the box, and the forward from Fremont, Calif., scored her second goal of the tournament. Notre Dame added a penalty kick two minutes later to retake the lead. A Bronco foul set up the attempt and Thorlakson's shot rose into the left side for the 2-1 advantage. Santa Clara stayed in the game, tying the match for a second time this afternoon with a score in the 81st minute on another goal by Estrada. Notre Dame put the game away with, scoring three goals in a four-minute span. Thorlakson accounted for two to notch a hat trick. Osborne and senior forward Megan Kakadelas were named to the All-Tournament team. Santa Clara remains on the road and will travel further east for next weekend's matches. The Broncos will open the Rutgers Tournament in Piscataway, N.J. against the host Scarlet Knights on Friday, and then take on Rhode Island on Sunday.
