PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The sixth-ranked Santa Clara University women's soccer team scored six goals in the first half to record a 6-0 victory over Rhode Island this afternoon to close play at the Rutgers Classic at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J. Sophomore Tina Estrada scored two goals, while senior Bree Horvath notched one score and two assists to even the Broncos' record to 2-2-1. The Rams were held to just one shot on the afternoon and fall to 2-4-0 on the season.
Junior defender Micaela Esquivel scored the game-winner in the 17th minute, scoring on a deflection from five yards out. Horvath earned the assist on the play.
The forward from Danville, Calif., followed with her own goal four minutes later, taking a through ball across the goal from Tiffany Roberts and scoring from 15 yards.
Horvath remained an integral part of the Bronco offense and assisted on the third goal of the afternoon in the 28th minute, finding fellow senior Megan Kakadelas in the box. Kakadelas scored her third goal of the season from 17 yards when the ball slipped through Ram keeper Kirsten Marra's hands.
Freshman Meagan Snell scored her first collegiate goal in the 34th minute to move the Bronco advantage to 4-0. Her corner kick bent into the goal.
Estrada, a native of nearby Fremont, scored the Broncos final two goals. Her first came in the 40th minute, when she took a through ball from Brittany Klein and scored from 14 yards. Her second followed four minutes later, when defender Catherine Sigler took a free kick, and Estrada scored on a header just inside one of the posts.
On the afternoon, the Broncos out-shot the Rams 13-1 and held an 11-1 corner kick advantage. Senior Alyssa Sobolik earned the shutout, the 13th of her career.
Santa Clara returns to the Bay Area and will participate in its third straight tournament next weekend. The Broncos will take part in the Stanford Nike Classic in nearby Palo Alto, and open against Yale on Friday at 5 p.m. SCU will also play Cal State Fullerton on Sunday at 11 a.m.
