The Stanford University Breast Cancer Research program is aimed at eliminating breast cancer as a health problem by efforts at prevention, early diagnosis, and effective treatment. The program involves a very large, internationally recognized group of breast cancer researchers and clinicians. The Community Breast Health Project is a community-based support and education resource for women with breast cancer and their families and friends. Its programs range from providing financial support to women with limited resources who are undergoing the evaluation of breast abnormalities to support groups to providing educational resources and programs.

Although this year will mark the tenth anniversary of KICKS Against Breast Cancer, this will be the first West Coast tournament. The event began in Washington, D.C. and has grown each year; there are now three KICKS tournaments held around the United States.

KICKS was established in honor of Claudia Mayer, who passed away in 1996 after a two-year battle with breast cancer. Since the inception of the tournament 10 years ago, donations and fund-raising by our participating teams and community has totaled more than $700,000. These funds were used to assist with the operating expenses for Howard County General Hospital's Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center in Columbia, Md., as well as free mammography screenings provided by Georgetown's Lombardi Cancer Center to women who lacked health insurance. Since the inaugural tournament, many other businesses have joined in establishing additional fund-raising events. Thus far, more than $1,000,0000 has been raised in support of the Center.
