Ryder Earns Preseason All-America Honors

Aug. 19, 2005

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University junior Julie Ryder was named to the Soccer Buzz Magazine preseason All-America women's soccer team, the publication announced recently.

Ryder, a two-time all-West Coast Conference honoree from DeKalb, Ill, was named the team's Most Valuable Defensive Player as a sophomore last season after registering 51 saves, the seventh best single-season total in program history. Her 12 shutouts led the WCC and her 0.63 goals against average was second-best in the league and third-best ever for a Bronco.

The Broncos, led by head coach Jerry Smith in his 19th season at Santa Clara, return seven starters and 17 letterwinners from last year's team that finished with an 18-5-2 record and advanced to the College Cup for the 10th time in school history. Santa Clara defeated Cal and Stanford in the first two rounds of the tournament before downing top-ranked North Carolina 1-0 in overtime on the road in Chapel Hill.
