WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Jordan Angeli and Brittany Klein appear to have a special chemistry between them. The Santa Clara University sophomores combined for the game-winning goal to lead the Bronco women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Virginia Tech.
Klein found a streaking Angeli, who connected on an aggressive shot from approximately 16 yards in front of the goal to score the game-winner as the fifth-ranked Broncos knocked-off the HOkies 3-1 in the Wake Forest ACC/WCC Challenge.
Santa Clara improved to 2-0-1 on the season, while the Hokies dropped to 1-2-1. The Broncos return to action Friday at Buck Shaw Stadium against defending national champion Notre Dame in a rematch of last year's College Cup semifinals. The highly anticipated 7 p.m. kickoff for the annual Santa Clara adidas Classic matchup will air on Comcast SportsNet West and Midwest. Freshman goalkeeper Meagan McCray earned her first appearance as a Bronco Sunday and performed well with two saves to get the win. Junior All-America goalkeeper Julie Ryder was the only player on the 20-person travel roster not to see action in the game after posting shutouts in her first two outings of the season.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard first as Meagan Snell's crossing pass deflected off a Virginia Tech player in what was scored as an own-goal to give SCU a 1-0 score in the 7th minute of the match.
Less than five minutes later Klein found Angeli for the game-winner on an aggressive offensive display by Angeli.
Virginia Tech pulled a goal back in the 33rd minute when Laurie Beth Puglisi scored on a header off a free kick from teammate Lindsay Alexander. Puglisi got free and just sneaked the ball past McCray into the goal.
In the 80th minute, junior Marian Dalmy took possession of the ball approximately 30 yards from goal off a combination play at midfield, dribbled and finished a shot from six yards away for the final score of the game.
Statistically, the two teams each attempted eight shots, while Santa Clara registered seven corner kicks to Va. Tech's five. The Broncos committed 13 fouls in the game, to the Hokies' nine.
Ryder, Amanda Poach, Klein, Dalmy and Lauren Zealear were named to the all-tournament team for Santa Clara.
