Angeli Earns WCC Player of the Week Honors

Sept. 12, 2005

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The accolades from this past weekend continue to roll in for sophomore forward Jordan Angeli. As if being named the Santa Clara adidas Classic's Most Valuable Player on Sunday wasn't enough, today Angeli was announced as the West Coast Conference's Player of the Week for her stellar performance on the pitch.

In Friday's dramatic 2-1 triumph over the top-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Angeli, who was playing at forward instead of her familiar defensive midfield spot, accounted for both Bronco goals. She took a pass from Meagan Snell and blasted a shot into the back of the net from ten yards out in the 21st minute to open the scoring. Late in the second half, with the score tied at 1-1 and time winding down, Angeli received a pass from Amanda Poach at the top of the box and flicked home the game-winner in right over the Notre Dame keeper's head in the 84th minute.

"I can't say enough about the play of Jordan Angeli," head coach Jerry Smith said Friday following the victory over Notre Dame. "It was really just an experiment to move her to the forward position. She has done a fantastic job. Finishing two quality goals against the team of the caliber that we played tonight showed what a great player she is."

Sunday, Angeli's playmaking skills again made the difference for the Broncos, as her pass in the 47th minute was one-timed by fellow sophomore Kendall Doherty for the lone goal of Santa Clara's 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton.

For the season, Angeli leads the Broncos with four goals and nine points. Her performance this weekend follows another solid week which saw her score in the opener against Arizona State and net the game-winner against Virginia Tech two Sundays ago.
