SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's soccer team found themselves well-represented on the All-West Coast Conference teams as selections were announced today. The Broncos had nine players voted to the four teams by the head coaches of their seven conference rivals.
Defender Marian Dalmy and forward Tina Estrada were Santa Clara's two representatives on the All-WCC first team. For Dalmy it is her second-straight first-team honor while Estrada earned top honors after being selected an honorable mention performer in 2003 and second-team in 2004.
Four Broncos earned second-team honors as Tiffany Roberts and Julie Ryder received their third straight All-WCC honor, while Jordan Angeli and Lauren Zealear each earned their second. Defender Micaela Esquivel was named an honorable mention performer.
Danielle Potts and Amanda Poach rounded out the Santa Clara honorees as both were selected to the conference's All-Freshmen team.
"Anytime you earn first-team recognition then you had to be very impressive, so Tina and Marian clearly are very deserving of being on the first team," Head coach Jerry Smith said of the honored Broncos. "The freshman class that we have this year has been fantastic and Dani and Amanda are very deserving of making the All-Freshman team, and they, along with the other freshmen on our team, will be big contributors in the years to come."
Portland swept all of the individual conference awards, as Christine Sinclair won her third WCC Player of the Year award while Stephanie Lopez was named Defensive Player of the Year, Megan Rapinoe earned Freshman of the Year honors and Garrett Smith was named Coach of the Year.
Santa Clara (14-4-2) is ranked fifth nationally and will face Fresno State in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. The Broncos will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament at Buck Shaw Stadium this Friday and Sunday. The Broncos will face the Bulldogs at 5 p.m., with Stanford and Saint Louis following in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. The winners will face each other on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are now on sale: $8 for adult admission and $6 for seniors, youths and students.
