STANFORD, Calif. - Riding high following a weekend sweep of two Top-10 teams down in Los Angeles, the No. 3 Santa Clara women's soccer team was jolted back down to earth Friday night as the No. 24 Boston University Terriers shocked the Broncos 1-0 at the Stanford Nike Classic.

"I think that after coming off of a great weekend and having a great season so far, the players fell into the trap that you sometimes do when you get off to a good start and that is that you just have to show up and you're going to win," said head coach Jerry Smith. "We didn't do a lot of the details that we're normally proficient at, and the most important lesson we learned today that you have to come to play and it doesn't matter if you're playing a highly-ranked team or not."

The Broncos will return to Stanford Sunday afternoon to finish tournament play as they take on the No. 9 Tennessee Lady Volunteers at 11:30 a.m.

Boston's Lauren Erwin broke a scoreless tie in the 63rd minute, taking a feed from Marisha Schumacher-Hodge and blasting a shot past SCU keeper Meagan McCray to put the Broncos in the 0-1 hole.

The first half was an uneventful affair, as the Broncos outshot the Terriers 4-1 but created only one threatening scoring opportunity, as Brittany Klein's one-timer in the 36th minute was saved by BU keeper Stephanie Dreyer.

In the waning minutes of the half, SCU missed a potential opportunity at a penalty kick when an apparent hand-ball violation on Boston was deemed inadvertent, and play continued on.

The final 45 minutes played out in similar fashion to the first 45, as, outside of Erwin's goal, both teams received fairly limited opportunities. Santa Clara got off seven shots and outshot the Terriers 11-5 for the match, but was unable to seriously threaten Dreyer until the last few minutes, and when Tiffany Roberts' last-ditch shot from 20 yards out went high, the Broncos had exhausted their final chance.
