SANTA CLARA, Calif. - As if her 2006 season hasn't been enough of a success just a month in, Santa Clara forward Meagan Snell earned another nod of recognition Wednesday afternoon as she was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Month for September. In nine matches last month, Snell scored eight goals, including game-winners against three teams ranked in the national top 10.
Snell, a native of Arroyo Grande, has already surpassed her 2005 totals of five goals and 16 points only 11 matches into the 2006 season. From Sept. 1-10, she scored a goal in four consecutive matches, becoming only the eighth Bronco to ever accomplish the feat. She also demonstrated her knack for scoring big goals in big matches, netting the game-winners against then No. 4 Texas A&M (on Sept. 10), then-No. 9 Tennessee (Sept. 17), and then-No. 3 UCLA (Sept. 22).
"[Meagan's play] has been absolutely critical for us, and has put us in a nice place and hopefully we can keep it going forward," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "Meagan's been the stabilizing factor on our front line and a great leader for us up there."
The No. 3 Broncos (9-2-0) conclude a five-match homestand at Buck Shaw Stadium this week with the Rivalry Series battle Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against San Jose State, and the West Coast Conference opener on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. against San Diego.
