MALIBU, Calif. - Despite dominating Sunday afternoon's match both on the field and on the stat sheet, the No. 3 Santa Clara women's soccer team failed to come out on top of the category that mattered most: goals. For the second year in a row, the Broncos found themselves on the short end of the stick on Tari Frohm Rokus Field in Malibu, falling 1-0 to the Pepperdine Waves.

The Broncos (11-3-1, 1-1-1 WCC) will now have to regroup from the weekend of hard-fought contests in time for Thursday night's crucial showdown with the No. 4 Portland Pilots at Buck Shaw Stadium. The nationally-televised match will kickoff at 8 p.m. and will be aired on Fox Soccer Channel. Tickets are available by calling (408) 554-4660 or by clicking here.

Much like last year's meeting between Santa Clara and Pepperdine, the Broncos outplayed the Waves (8-4-3, 2-0-1 WCC), out-shooting them 16-7 on Sunday while taking eight corner kicks to Pepperdine's two. But once again, just like in 2005, the Waves got behind the Bronco defense and cashed in with a goal in the 81st minute. This time, it was Pepperdine forward Sophia Medina delivering the blow after a Lindsey Redlin pass sprung Medina for a breakaway in which she beat SCU keeper Meagan McCray from six yards out.

With the loss, the Broncos have now dropped four straight matches in Malibu.

McCray made three saves for Santa Clara, while offensively, the Broncos had chances as forwards Jordan Angeli and Meagan Snell each took four shots, but only one of those came on frame. Amanda Poach put two shots on goal, while Kiki Bosio and Brittany Klein each had one, but Waves keeper Kayla Stolte denied the Broncos each time, making five saves.
