Eight Broncos Receive WCC All-Academic Honors

Jan. 30, 2008

Santa Clara, Calif. -- The West Coast Conference announced their 2007 Fall All-Academic Team today and eight Santa Clara student athletes had earned a spot on the team in the five fall sports. The men's soccer team led the way with three players, seniors Matt Hatzke, Peter Lowry, and Matt Marquess. Sophomore Kiki Bosio was the sole representative from the women's soccer team. Senior Michael Delaurenti and sophomore Alex Harkins represent Santa Clara's men's cross country team, while sophomore Annie Murphy-Hagan represents the women's team. Sophomore Lauryn Dowd of the volleyball team rounded out the Broncos representation on the WCC Fall All-Academic Team.

Hatzke, an accounting major, had the second best GPA for the men's soccer All-Academic team with a 3.72. This is the second academic award the defender has received this year, after earlier being named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. Hatzke was also named to the All-WCC Second Team, the NSCAA All-Far West Region Second Team, and was drafted in the fourth round by the Los Angeles Galaxy with the 51st pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft.

The WCC Player of the Year, Lowry was a star in the classroom as well. The finance major earned a 3.24 GPA on the year. Lowry led Santa Clara with eight goals and seven assists this year. Lowry's other accolades include being a M.A.C. Hermann Trophy semifinalist, making the NSCAA All-Far West Region First Team, being named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of Season First Team, the College Soccer News All-American First Team, and the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award All-Senior All-America Second Team. Lowry was also taken by the Chicago Fire in the second round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft with the 26th overall pick.

Marquess, a finance major, had a 3.68 GPA this year and this is also his second appearance on the WCC All-Academic Team. He has appeared in 67 straight games for the Broncos and the defender even notched his first career goal this year. The All-WCC Honorable Mention player was also drafted in the 2008 SuperDraft by the Kansas City Wizards in the third round with the 39th overall selection.

Bosio had the highest GPA of all the Santa Clara representatives on the All-Academic team with a sparkling 3.86. The business administration major was tied for the team lead in goals, with seven, and led the team in assists with six. Bosio started all 21 games for the Broncos and also received NSCAA All-West Region Second Team honors, was named to All-WCC First Team, and earned Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Season honors.

For the cross country team, Delaurenti was the picture of consistency this year. In the classroom, the finance major earned a 3.36 GPA, but on the course, he finished first on the team in every race this year. He earned his first collegiate win at the USF Invitational in the first meet of the year, had three top ten finishes, including an astounding 3rd place finish in the WCC Championships which earned him All-WCC 1st Team honors.

Harkins, a sophomore engineering major, earned a 3.29 GPA this year. Harkins took 15th in the WCC Championships this year, earning him All-WCC honorable mention. He also took 3rd place in the USF Invitational in the first meet of the year.

Murphey-Hagan took home a 3.62 GPA her sophomore year. The communication studies major battled health issues for part of the season, but finished second on the team in half the races she participated in. She also took home 18th place in the WCC Championships.

The sophomore outside hitter Dowd started in 29 of the 31 matches for the Broncos this year, while earning a 3.21 GPA in the classroom. Dowd compiled an impressive season with 149 kills, a .256 hitting percentage, 37 service aces and 71 total blocks. She finished the season first on the team in aces and total blocks.
