Marian Dalmy Named To 2007 U.S. World Cup Roster

July 23, 2007

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Former Santa Clara University soccer star Marian Dalmy '07 became the third Bronco to be named to the 2007 United States World Cup roster on Monday. U.S. national team coach Greg Ryan named Dalmy, along with Angela Hucles and Natasha Kai, as the final three members of the team that will compete in the FIFA Women's World Cup in China in September. The 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup will be held Sept. 10-30 in five Chinese cities. The USA opens its tournament on Sept. 11 in Chengdu against North Korea.

Dalmy joins Aly Wagner '03 and Leslie Osborne '05, who were among the first 18 players selected, on the squad. The Broncos now have at least three World Cup representatives for the second World Cup in a row.

"Marian joined us very late in the selection process, but she has been impressive and consistent in her play as a wing defender," said Ryan. "Her skill and composure make her a very good attacking flank defender. She is developing her defending skills rapidly and looks to have a great future with this team."

Dalmy is the least-capped field player named to the Women's World Cup Team having earned just two caps, against Mexico and Canada earlier this year. The tall, skillful and agile outside back joined Residency Training Camp just last May, which was her first experience with the full team after spending some time with the U.S. Under-21s. Her strong play the last three months earned Dalmy a spot on the roster.

At Santa Clara, Dalmy finished her outstanding career in 2006 by being named the WCC Player of the Year, All-WCC First Team and All-Far West Region First Team. She scored six goals and had six assists to lead all WCC defenders in scoring, while helping the Broncos earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. For her career, she was named All-WCC First Team three times and was a Soccer Buzz All-American as a junior. The Lakewood, Colo. native scored 16 goals and had 11 assists in 85 career games on the Mission Campus.

Dalmy, Wagner and Osborne will all appear this weekend for the U.S. Women's National Team in a Send-Off Series match at Spartan Stadium in San Jose. The Americans take on Japan at 7 p.m. PT.
