SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Former Santa Clara University star and U.S. National Team player Devvyn Hawkins '03 has been named an assistant coach for the Bronco women's soccer program. Hawkins, who helped lead SCU to its only national title in 2001, replaces Albertin Montoya on Jerry Smith's staff. She will be involved in all aspects of the program, while focusing on overseeing the midfielders.
"I loved my time at SCU as a student athlete and I am extremely excited and honored to return as a coach," said Hawkins. "I am looking forward to working with a well respected coaching staff and help coach a talented group of women. It feels great to once again be a part of one of the best Division I women's soccer teams in the nation."
Hawkins, 26, has been heavily involved in coaching for the past three years, serving as the assistant women's soccer coach at Cabrillo College in Aptos, while also coaching youth teams for the Santa Cruz County Breakers. The Sitka, Alaska native has also coached at Aptos High School and with Santa Clara Sporting. She earned her United States Soccer Federation "C" license in 2006.
"I'm thrilled to have Devvyn back on campus," said head coach Jerry Smith. "In addition to being a great player for us here at Santa Clara University, she was a well-rounded student-athlete and a great leader. Her SCU experience as well as her professional and international playing experience will serve her well when coaching and mentoring our current players. Devvyn will be very comfortable overseeing our midfield group as that is where she has always played. Additionally, Devvyn's coaching experience at the club and Community College level over the last several years has allowed her to gain some very valuable knowledge."
As a player, Hawkins, who grew up in Olympia, Wash., had one of the most decorated careers in Bronco history, playing for SCU from 1999-2002. She helped lead Santa Clara to its only national title in 2001 and then helped the team reach the championship game the following season. As a senior captain, she was named NSCAA All-American Second Team, Soccer Buzz All-American Second Team, NSCAA All-West Region Second Team, and All-WCC First Team, while also being named Santa Clara's Player of the Year and Most Inspirational Player.
In all, the midfielder was named All-WCC four times and All-West Region three times in her career. She started 88 of 93 career games and recorded 21 goals and 20 assists in her illustrious Bronco career. During her four seasons at SCU, she played three times against North Carolina and the Broncos won all three games, including a 1-0 win in the 2001 National Championship Game. She scored the Broncos only goal in their 2-1 overtime loss to Portland in the 2002 National Championship Game.
Hawkins' strong play also earned her a spot in the U.S. national team player pool. She played in nine matches from 2001-2003 for the Americans and scored one goal. Her goal was a golden goal strike against Germany to help the U.S. win the Four Nations Tournament in China in 2003. After leaving Santa Clara, Hawkins was selected third overall by the Boston Breakers of the Women's United Soccer Association. She played for the Breakers in the final year of the league (2003) and helped them win the regular season championship with a 10-4-7 record.
