SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's soccer team climbed in the national rankings this week to claim the No. 1 spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 poll, it was announced Tuesday.
The Broncos have compiled a 6-0-1 overall record this season, which includes three shutouts. SCU began the season in eighth place in the weekly poll and have steadily moved their way up the rankings. Last week the Broncos claimed the No. 2 spot, and after posting back-to-back shutouts against Arizona State and Arizona over the weekend, moved into the top spot.
SCU also moved into first place in the Soccer Times and Soccer Buzz weekly top 25, while jumping two spots to No. 2 in TopDrawerSoccer.com's list. For the past three week, the Broncos have held steady as the top team in the Soccer America weekly poll.
For their efforts this week, two Bronco defenders earned National team of the week honors. Redshirt freshman Lindsey Johnson earned her first-ever weekly honor as she was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's team of the week, while senior Chioma Igwe received her second career Soccer Buzz Elite team of the week accolade.
The Broncos return to action this weekend against the Mustangs of Cal Poly. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., in San Luis Obispo, Calif. On Sunday, Santa Clara will host No. 22 California at Buck Shaw Stadium at 1 p.m.
