STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 2 Santa Clara women's soccer team battled through a tough match against local rival No. 1 Stanford Friday night. The Broncos finished the night 0-0, as they handed the Cardinal its first tie of the season. Junior Meagan McCray posted a season best 12 saves and earned her fourth shutout of the season with an excellent effort. The Broncos are now 7-1-2 on the season, while the Cardinal stands at 9-1-1 overall.

Leading the attack for Santa Clara were Kiki Bosio and Tina Estrada, who each attempted two shots. However, the night belonged to the Bronco defense as they shutout a quick and talented Cardinal front line.

"We did what we needed to do tonight," said head coach Jerry Smith. "We only had one usable sub against a healthy, fast and deep Stanford team. I'm very proud of how my team played tonight. They played a much disciplined game and tonight the post was our friend. Our defense worked hard to limit the space in the penalty box and did a great job stopping what is probably the fastest front line in the nation."

Contributing to SCU's defense was freshman Maxine Goynes, who earned her second start of the season as she replaced an injured Lindsey Johnson.

"Maxine started at center back for us tonight," said Smith. "A due to the tactful choices we made tonight, her job was a bit simpler, but she played very well given the circumstances of tonight's game."

Taken to overtime, neither team could see the back of the net despite seven shots attempted by the Cardinal. Stanford's Christen Press had the final shot of the night at one minute remaining, but the ball hit the crossbar.

The Broncos continue play on the road this weekend as they travel south to Los Angeles to face the Bruins of UCLA. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
