SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Santa Clara women's soccer team faced a hard-fought 1-0 loss to No. 16 San Diego Sunday afternoon in their first West Coast Conference match of the season. The Broncos now have an overall record of 8-3-2 and are 0-1-0 in league play, while the Toreros improve to 10-1-2 on the season and 1-0-0 in WCC action.

The lone goal of the contest was scored by the Toreros' Amy Epsten just before the end of the first half. The heavily marked Epsten received the ball from Leigh Ann Robinson and then dribbled past goalkeeper Meagan McCray and tapped the ball into the left corner. Shortly afterwards, freshman Anessa Patton attempted to knot the score before the half was over, but her shot went slightly wide.

In the second half, the Broncos were able to limit the Toreros to just two shots, but were unable to capitalize on their own efforts. Redshirt senior Tina Estrada subbed back into the match and in the very last minutes of the game tried to equalize the score twice, but was unsuccessful.

The Broncos outshot the Toreros 7-6 and owned a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Santa Clara returns to Buck Shaw Stadium to host three contests next week. The Broncos start off with a Wednesday, Oct. 17 game against the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. Santa Clara will the host Pepperdine on Friday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m., and Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Oct. 21 at Noon.
