SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The eighth-ranked Santa Clara women's soccer team lost a hard-fought battle to Gonzaga Thursday afternoon at Martin Field in Spokane, Wash. The Bulldogs edged the Broncos, 2-1, to earn their first-ever win in the all-time series. With the loss, SCU has an overall record of 10-4-3 and heads into Sunday's game against Portland with an even, 2-2, West Coast Conference record. Meanwhile, Gonzaga improved to 10-5-1 overall and 2-2 in league play.

"We played really well in the first half," said head coach Jerry Smith. "We had a lot of opportunities but were unable to score and once Gonzaga scored the game really became more of a battle."

It wasn't until the second half that action began for both teams. The Zags scored first right at the start of the half off a corner kick. Kelcey Goddard tapped the ball in for the Bulldogs to make the score 1-0.

Almost half an hour later Santa Clara forward Kiki Bosio scored the equalizing goal in the 75th minute. It was her ninth career goal and sixth of this season. The goal was once again another solid individual effort from Bosio. Similar to her goal against Pepperdine, the sophomore fought off two defenders before landing her shot in the high right corner of the net.

However, Lauren Zuckerman's header found the back of the net in the 83rd minute to give Gonzaga a 2-1 victory.

In the match, Santa Clara outshot Gonzaga 19-6, while Lauren Ames collected seven saves to Meagan McCray's three saves.

Santa Clara returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 28 to battle the Portland Pilots on national television. Kick off is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT on ESPNU.
