SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 12 Santa Clara women's soccer team defeated San Jose State, 3-0, extending their all time record to 13-0-0 over the Spartans. The Broncos controlled the ball most of the first half and the defense only allowed one shot all half. Scoring the first goal of the 2008 campaign for Santa Clara was Lexi Orand, who's shot crossed into the far post off a Lindsey Johnson assist. Freshman Jenny LaPonte scored her first collegiate goal off a cross from Orand that sailed past SJSU's goalkeeper Jordan Santos.

On a night where head coach Jerry Smith's Broncos dominated their opponent, he was also able to see what his No. 12 ranked freshman class was able to produce. Seeing action was Margueritte Aozasa and Bridgett Miller, who subbed in the first and second halves, and making her collegiate debut and starting at defender was Kathleen Matthew, who played solid at right back the entire game.

"Five players played in their first college game," said Smith. "It was good to give our young players the opportunity to play because traditionally you do not play as well due to nerves. The exception would be Jenny who scored her first goal fairly soon after she subbed in."

Less than five minutes into the second half Anessa Patton scored off Kiki Bosio's shot that deflected off Santos to improve the Broncos lead to 3-0. Goalkeepers Meagan McCray and Lisa Lahman shared time in goal, in Santa Clara's first shutout of the season. San Jose was not able to get any shots on goal, only shooting four shots all game.

The Broncos resume action next week when they travel to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Tournament. On Friday, Aug. 29 they will face No. 10 West Virginia at 2:00 p.m. PT, and on Sunday, Aug. 31 they will play No. 4 Notre Dame at 10:30 a.m. PT.
