Broncos Fall 1-0 in Double Overtime to No. 22 Cal

Sept. 28, 2008

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's soccer team played over 108 minutes against No. 22 California for their fourth extra time game in a row. The Broncos went toe-to-toe with the Bears for much of the game, until Cal's Nikki Schrey scored the golden goal with 2:47 left to go in the second overtime period.

"Overall Cal was on the offensive attack more than we were," said head coach Jerry Smith. "We were able to stay in the game until the last minutes of the second overtime. It is disappointing, but I thought Meagan McCray played well and deserved a better result."

Santa Clara kept the ranked Pac-10 opponent out of the box for two regulation and almost two overtime periods; while working to try to create offensive opportunities. McCray had another standout game in goal, playing three days after getting kicked in the face in Thursday's tie to No. 2 UCLA. Cal came out firing in the game, posting 26 shots to SCU's three, but the Broncos defense kept composed throughout the game and worked to keep the Bears out of the net.

"Meagan once again had a great game," said Smith of the senior keeper who had eight saves. "She did everything she could to get her second straight shutout, but some protection weakened, and Cal was able to capitalize and get the win."

Midway through the second half, Santa Clara had their best scoring opportunity of the game to take the 1-0 lead. Kiki Bosio hit a through ball from outside the box to Chelsea Bednarz, but the Bear's keeper Gina Pellegrini was able to get a hold of Bednarz's shot for a save.

Santa Clara continues non-conference play when they host two Pac-10 opponents. On Friday, Sept. 3 they take on No. 6 Stanford at 7 p.m., and on Sunday, 5 Sept. Arizona at 1 p.m.

Official box score to be posted tomorrow.
