This Week For The Broncos
The Santa Clara women's soccer team will continue conference play this weekend when they take on Saint Mary's and University of San Francisco. The Gael of Saint Mary's travel to Santa Clara on Friday, Oct. 17. Kick off is set for 6 p.m. Two days later, the Broncos will host USF at Buck Shaw Stadium, at 1 p.m. Both days, the Bronco men will play following the conclusion of the women's games.
Last Week for The Broncos
The Broncos opened up conference play on Sunday, Oct. 12 at home versus then No. 20 University of San Diego. Junior Kiki Bosio got the Broncos on the board for the first time this season with her first half goal versus the No. 20 Toreros of the University of San Diego. Santa Clara's first half, 1-0, lead was not enough to stop the (9-3-2 overall, 1-0-0 conference) Toreros, as the Broncos fell, 2-1, to USD in their conference home opener.
Bosio was credited with the lone goal that came in the 23rd minute, as the tri-captain threw the ball in on a Broncos throw in. The ball then bounced out of the hands of USD's senior goal keeper Brittany Cameron into the net. It was the first goal for Santa Clara in six games.
The Broncos played very aggressive and were physical, working to create opportunities to get the ball to the back of the net. Bosio, who has been a solid force for Santa Clara, broke out of her 13-game scoring slump and had three shots in the game. The Broncos tallied seven shots on the day's play and junior Katherine Reynolds also had a strong day at the right wing in midfield. She ran up and down the line crossing balls into the box all afternoon keeping San Diego on their toes.
After going down, 1-0, in the first half, the Toreros came back firing. Two minutes into the second half USD's Jackie Zinke crossed a ball to Elissa Magracia just out of the box. Magracia, who was open, was able to cross the ball into the far post past the Broncos keeper Meagan McCray. Zinke was also credited for creating the second Torero score, as she passed the ball to hustling Amy Epsten, in a give-and-go sequence, and Epsten shot the ball to far post past a diving McCray.

Bosio Reaches Back of the Net
Junior forward Kiki Bosio broke her thirteen game scoring slump this past weekend versus then No. 20 University of San Diego. Bosio was credited with the Broncos first half goal, when she took a SCU throw in towards the box. The ball was then tipped in by USD's goal keeper Brittany Cameron, to give Santa Clara the 1-0 lead. Bosio, who was an offensive leader last season for the Broncos, posts a goal and an assist on the season. She is third in points with three. She also has been honored this season as a M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Watch List nominee, and was named to the all-tournament teams at the Inn at Saint Mary's Soccer Classic at Notre Dame and the Santa Clara/adidas Classic.
Solo Senior, McCray Continues to Play Consistently
While the Broncos have faced ranked opponents in almost every week of play this season, solo starting senior goal keeper Meagan McCray continues to lead Santa Clara through solid play in this difficult season. With an undoubtedly very tough schedule in 2008, the Broncos' keeper has worked immensely hard this season to keep SCU in games this season. She has posted 47 saves in 11 games, and has tallied two shutouts, one was versus then No. 2 UCLA on Sept. 25.
Ranked Opponents
This season the Broncos have faced nine ranked opponents this season, eight of which are still in the national rankings, and five are in the top-10, including No. 1 Notre Dame. On Aug. 29, SCU defeated then No. 10 West Virginia, 2-1, in overtime, on Sept. 7, 2-1, at then No. 21 Cal State Fullerton, and on Sept. 25, they hosted then No. 2 UCLA to a double overtime draw.
Scouting Saint Mary's
The 8-4-1 overall, 1-0-0 WCC, Gaels of Saint Mary's enter this weekend off of their 2-0 win over University of San Francisco in their conference opener. Saint Mary's has won their last three games, two of which were at home.
In their WCC home opener, they outplayed the Dons of San Francisco throughout the 90th minute game. Ashley Nied scored in the 54th minute to get the 1-0 advantage of USF. Mercede Koning then solidified the lead with a follow up goal in the 80th minute. Danielle Spann assisted in both goals.
Nied leads SMC, offensively with six goals and 12 points thus far this season, and Spann posts two assists and two goals this season. In goal, solo keeper Tara Larson has tallied four shutouts this season and has a goals against average of 1.03.
In their last meeting, the Broncos breezed by the Gaels, 3-0, on Nov. 10, 2007. Santa Clara leads the all-time series 25-3-3.
Scouting San Francisco
The Dons of the University of San Francisco come into this weekend with a 5-7-2 overall, 0-1-0 WCC record. They are led by Nicole Moore, who has scored four goals this season and eight points, and Katherine Kimure, who has one goal on the season. In goal, San Francisco has given minutes to three different keepers. Leading the Dons in the net is Kelly Pohle, who has played in 11 games thus far. She posts a 4-5-1 overall record, two shutouts and a goals against average of 1.39.
In their WCC opener at Saint Mary's they fell, 2-0, in Moraga, Calif. They had eight shots to the Gaels 12. Pohle had fives saves, and Moore and Kallie Caldwell each had a pair of shots.
Before USF travels to Santa Clara they will travel to San Diego to take on the No. 17 Toreros, on Friday, Oct. 17.
The Broncos look to remain undefeated versus San Francisco, as they lead the all-time series, 24-0-0. In their last meeting on Nov. 4, SCU edged the Dons, 1-0 for the win.
On Deck
The Broncos will hit the road for their first conference road trip of the season. They will take on LMU on Friday, Oct. 24 at 3:30 p.m. in Los Angeles, and then go to Malibu to take on the Waves of Pepperdine at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26.
