Reynolds Named WCC Player of the Week

Oct. 20, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Katherine Reynolds of the Santa Clara women's soccer team was named WCC Player of the Week for the first time in her SCU career. The Bronco tri-captain had a standout weekend for Santa Clara as she was an integral part in SCU's 3-0 shutout over conference rival University of San Francisco.

The junior from Medina, Wash. got on the board for the first time this season, scoring two goals and notching an assist in the game. She converted a penalty kick and less than three minutes later she scored a second goal. Twenty minutes later she found Jenny LaPonte in the box to assist on LaPonte's goal. She had four shots in the game, and two days prior versus Saint Mary's she had two shots in the 1-1 double overtime draw.

"I am excited and happy for Katherine to be named Player of the Week," head coach Jerry Smith said. "In what has been a tough stretch in our season, it is great that one of our captains came out and had a strong impact to get us a much needed victory."

Reynolds, who had been playing in an outside defender all season, moved up to forward this past weekend. In her first minutes in an offensive attacking position, she was able to make her mark and lead the Broncos to their first win, both at home and in conference play. This season she has tallied four assists, two goals and eight points for second on the team.

"I was glad I was able to play forward and have an opportunity to help the team get a win," said Reynolds.

Santa Clara looks to remain in the win column, as they remain in the hunt for their 10th conference championship. SCU travels to Southern California this weekend to take on 4th place Loyola Marymount (7-5-3 overall, 2-1-0 WCC) at 3:30 p.m. in Los Angles, followed by a trip to Malibu to take on the Waves of Pepperdine (6-8-2 overall, 1-2-0 WCC) at 1 p.m.
