SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's soccer team concluded the 2008 season with a scoreless double overtime draw to conference rival Gonzaga. Prior to the game, SCU celebrated solo senior Meagan McCray's career in their annual Senior Day ceremony. McCray posted her third shutout of the season, tallying four saves in the 110 minute contest.

"It was nice to conclude the season with a shutout on Senior Day, especially since our lone senior is our goalkeeper," head coach Jerry Smith said. "I am glad we were able to keep a strong backline and not let Gonzaga convert any shot opportunities."

Santa Clara outplayed the Bulldogs and had several close scoring opportunities. They outshot GU 42-11 in the extra period match and penetrated Gonzaga's backline throughout the game, but were unable to caapitalize on their offensive prowess.

Freshman Bridgett Miller made her first career start.

In a season filled with firsts, Smith gave freshman Bridgett Miller her first career start at forward. Miller had seven shots in the game and was the Broncos' biggest offensive threat. Forward Chelsea Bednarz also worked continuously throughout the game to create goal opportunities. Bednarz had 10 shots and kept Gonzaga's keeper Lauren Ames on her toes. Ames had 12 saves in the game to prevent SCU from getting on the board.

"We played well and were the better team statistically," said Smith. "Unfortunately we were not able to get the lead in one stat, the score, to get a win in our final game of the season."

The Broncos conclude the 2008 campaign with a 4-12-4 overall, 1-4-2 WCC record. This is the first time in 20 years that SCU's season does not include post-season action in the NCAA Tournament.
