Santa Clara To Honor Former Bronco And World Cup Champion Brandi Chastain At Stanford Game

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University women's soccer will be honoring the No. 21 jersey of former Bronco star and World Cup Champion Brandi Chastain at halftime on Sun., Sept. 18 against the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal at Buck Shaw Stadium.

"Brandi is not only a world-class athlete, but an international superstar, as well as a tireless advocate for women and young girls," said Santa Clara athletic director Dan Coonan. "Through it all, she has never forgotten or neglected her role within the Santa Clara family, which she represents so flawlessly in all she does. She epitomizes what it means to be a Bronco. We are thrilled to make her our first retired jersey honoree for women's soccer"

Chastain played for Santa Clara in 1989 and 1990 and both years led the Broncos the NCAA College Cup Final Four. In her two years in a Bronco uniform she scored 33 goals and had six assists for a total of 72 points. As an All-American in 1990 her 22 goals and 50 points are the third and fourth most in a season for a Santa Clara player, respectively.

During her professional career she played in the Women's United Soccer Association from 2001-2003 with the San Jose CyberRays where she was a member of the Bay Area's first women's professional championship team in 2001. She later played for FC Gold Pride of Women's Professional Soccer in 2009 and the California Storm of the Women's Premiere Soccer League in 2010.

Chastain may be best remembered, however, for her play on the international stage. She played for a total of 12 seasons with the United States National Team where she played nearly 14,000 minutes while scoring 30 goals and registering 26 assists.

Her most famous moment was on July 10, 1999 at the Women's World Cup championship game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. Chastain scored the fifth penalty kick to give the United State the inaugural Women's World Cup Championship over China. Her celebration was featured on the covers of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated.
