SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Earning its 22nd NCAA Tournament bid on Monday, the seventh-ranked Santa Clara University women's soccer team will play Cal in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sat., Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. The game will be at Buck Shaw Stadium where the Broncos went 7-1-2 during the regular season. Its only loss at home was 2-0 to No. 1 Stanford.
"What a great match for Bay Area soccer fans to see two wonderful, local programs in the first round," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith, who is in his 25th year at the helm. "It is sure to be an entertaining and dramatic NCAA Tournament matchup between two local rivals."
Santa Clara and Cal played earlier in the year on Sept. 25, 2011 at Buck Shaw. At the time Cal was ranked No. 17 in the country and Santa Clara was No. 21 and the Broncos won 3-0. Julie Johnston scored two goals to lead the Santa Clara offense and Katie Speidel scored her first collegiate goal. Senior All-American goalkeeper Bianca Henninger registered four saves. Tickets prices are set for the NCAA Tournament First Round vs. Cal. Gates will open at 1 p.m. for the 2 p.m. game. They are $10 for adults; $7 for youth 12 and under and seniors 65 and older; and $7 for Santa Clara students. The first 100 Santa Clara students will be admitted for free as Santa Clara is picking up the tab.
