Santa Clara Women's Soccer Announces Class of 2016

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Adding to a Bronco team roster that was ranked as high as No. 7 in the country in 2011, Santa Clara head women's soccer coach Jerry Smith announced the signing of five players for the class of 2016 Thursday. The class consists of four attacking players and a goalkeeper.

The Broncos-to-be at Ashley Doyle, Megan Crosson, Danielle Weatherholdt, Andi Tostanoski and Brittany Ambrose.

"I'm very excited about the 2012 class that we just signed," said Smith. "All five of these players will have an opportunity to impact our program right away and more importantly, they each have wonderful potential which we are all looking forward to helping develop over the next four years.  Each one of these student/athletes will be a welcomed addition to our team."

Head coach Jerry Smith on Ashley: "Ashley may be the most versatile player in our incoming class.  She plays as well at the front of the team as she does the back.  She is also very two-footed which will allow her to play on either flank well.  Ashley is very determined and athletic.  I believe she will be mostly used as a utility player in her first year until we determine a regular position for her.  Her versatility will allow her to get on the field in several different positions."

Head coach Jerry Smith on Megan: "Megan is a naturally left-footed player with great attacking capability in both the middle and attacking areas of the field.  She has tremendous poise and composure on the ball allowing her to be very aware and make great decisions on the ball.  Megan has the ability to score and/or set up her teammates with a quality pass, especially with her left.  Megan is anxious to make up for lost time as she has missed most of the last couple years of development due to injuries."

Danielle Weatherholt            5-8       Capistrano Beach, Calif.      San Clemente HS

High School: Played four years of varsity soccer at San Clemente High School ... club was South Coast League Champions in 2009 and '12 ...D1 CIF SS Finalist in 2011 and '12 ... D1 CIF and State Champions in 2009 ... ranked No. 1 by ESPN in 2009.

Club: Played for Sothern California Club for nine years ... team captain for seven of them ... played for Cal South State Team 2011-2012 ... ranked by TopDrawer Soccer No. 5 in So Cal and  No. 19 Nationally ... 2011 ODP National Champions ... 2011 U17 Far West Regional Champions and advanced to Nationals ... Head coach Jerry Smith on Danielle: "Dani is the most complete player in our incoming class.  Her game reminds me of Leslie Osborne's game when she came to Santa Clara.  Dani impacts the game equally well on the attacking side of things and on the defensive side.  Dani is very determined, competitive, driven and tough.  In fact, Dani's mental side is a good as I've seen at the youth level.  I believe Dani will be another great central midfield player in a long line of great central midfield players we've had at Santa Clara University."

Andi Tostanoski        5-9       Colorado Springs, Colo.       Palmer HS

High School: Made state playoffs in 2010 and '11 with Palmer HS ... First-Team All-Metro in 2011 ... MVP in 2010 and '11.

Club: Invited to Jan. 2012 National Team training camp but did not attend due to injury ... club team was a State Cup Semi-Finalist in 2011 ... State Cup MVP in 2011 ... 2010 and '11 Region IV team ... Colorado Youth Soccer Hall of Fame Inductee in Jan. 2011 ... U18 National Team training camp in Jan. and Oct. 2011 ... Head coach Jerry Smith on Andi: "One of only a handful of keepers in the country to be considered the best in the class in her position.  In addition to her shot-stopping ability, Andi is very good on crossing balls, has excellent distribution with both her hands and feet, and is a very mature and focused individual.  These characteristics will allow her to be fast-tracked in terms of her development."

Brittany Ambrose     5-4       Surrey BC, Canada              Elgin Park HS

Club: Selected to Vancouver Whitecaps Women's Elite ... one of 10 selected to team ... selected twice (2010-11 and 2011-12) ... Provincial Champions U12 and U16 ... MVP Provincial Finals Coastal Cup ... Member of BC Provincial teams U13, U14 and two years at U16 ... Leading scorer on all club teams from U9-U16 ... recorded 10 goals at Albion Cup ... scored 25 goals in a 17-game season for the U13 BC team ... member of Canadian U12 DANONE Nations Cup where she was one of six girls to compete with 560 boys while she started all games for Canada ... selected to Canadian Soccer Association NTC West ... identified by CSA ... silver and bronze medalist at Canadian Nationals.

Head coach Jerry Smith on Brittany: "Brittany will assimilate very quickly into our program as her sister, Nikki, is currently in her second year with us. This will allow Brittany to gain a heads start on how things run here.  Brittany is a tough-minded, hard-working, goal scoring forward which are all welcomed additions to our team.  Like the Canadian that she is, she plays in front of the net much the same way a hockey player would and is fearless in going after goal scoring opportunities."
