SANTA CLARA, Calif. – As summer was approaching on the Mission Campus, the Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative held its second annual Sportsapalooza with Santa Clara greats Brandi Chastain '91 and Brent Jones '85 serving as its host. The event was co-sponsored by Santa Clara and Bronco alumni in an effort to promote athletics and health for young girls.

Santa Clara senior Jessica Periera started her involvement with BAWSI through a class internship program.

"I just love the mission of [BAWSI] in helping female athletes strive to be their best and help younger girls … be healthy and active," said Periera.

Sportsapalooza is BAWSI's largest fundraising event. Held at Santa Clara, BAWSI invited young female athletes to participate in an array of activities, as well as inviting donors and their families to participate.

In addition to Chastain, a former U.S. Women's Soccer Team great, and Jones, a Super Bowl champion with the 49ers, a number of others also participated. Appearances were made by San Francisco Giants P.A. announcer Renel Brooks-Moon and former 49ers Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young. Collegiate female student-athletes from several universities including Santa Clara and Stanford volunteered at the event.

"I knew that we were making a difference in the lives of these little girls. I could see it in their faces and eyes," said BAWSI CEO Marlene Bjornsrud.
