Bronco Women's Soccer Wins 1-0 vs. Boston

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Playing in its final game of the Stanford Tournament, Santa Clara women's soccer took down Boston University 1-0. Santa Clara is now 3-2-2 while Boston moves to 3-4-1.

In her second game back with the team, Sofia Huerta scored the only goal of the game in the 48th minute. It was her first goal of the season and was unassisted. Huerta attempted eight shots while Meleana Shim attempted four. The Broncos outshot Boston 17-9 and 6-2 in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Andi Tostanoski only had to make two saves.

The Broncos return to the field on Fri., Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. vs. UNC Greensboro and Sun., Sept. 16 at 1:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Buck Shaw as part of the Santa Clara Tournament.

"I thought we were solid defensively today," said Bronco head coach Jerry Smith. "We didn't give up a lot of opportunities. Any time you can get a shutout you guarantee yourself at least a tie. We don't want to make a habit of 1-0 wins but it's certainly better than a loss. We're happy we got the shutout but we're still working on getting that second goal. We had enough chances today to get the second goal just like in the previous three games against tough opponents."

Santa Clara used a series of passes to nearly break the scoreless tie in the 23rd minute. The ball was sent to just outside the box where it was chipped into the air and Huerta got behind the defender but her shot went just over the crossbar and landed on the top of the goal.

Minutes later Huerta had another chance when she took a pass in front of the goal but her one-timer sailed high to keep the game scoreless.

Alyssa Kleiner had a terrific chance in the 40th minute but Andrea Green made a good save. Kleiner took a heel pass from Huerta and was one-on-one with the goalkeeper on the left side of the goal. Without a good angle on the shot, Kleiner hit the goalkeeper and the ball went out for a Santa Clara corner.

In the 48th minute Santa Clara broke through to make the score 1-0. Huerta stole the ball away from the defender and it went past the defense in front of an empty net. Huerta beat the defense to the loose ball and slid to knock it into the net.

Lauren Matheson almost scored the second Bronco goal of the match in the 76th minute but Green made a great save. Matheson took a shot from just outside the top of the box that was deflected into the air by a Boston defender. The goalkeeper had to knock it away from going in the top of the goal and hit it off the crossbar to keep the Santa Clara lead at 1-0.

Nikki Ambrose almost scored her first goal off of a header in the 84th minute when Matheson took a short corner kick and sent the ball into the box. Ambrose got a solid shot off that was on target but the goalkeeper dove to her left to make the save. The ball squirted out of Green's possession and went out for another corner kick but the Broncos couldn't capitalize.

The Broncos were able to run out the clock and take the game 1-0.
