No. 21 Santa Clara and No. 6 BYU Open WCC Play with Scoreless Draw

PROVO, Utah - Opening its conference schedule vs. a top-10 team, No. 21 Santa Clara women's soccer took on No. 6 BYU in the first-ever regular season game in Provo for the Broncos. Santa Clara played to a 0-0 draw and is now at 7-2-4 overall and 0-0-1 in WCC play. The Cougars move to 11-1-1 and 0-0-1 in conference. 

In yet another tight game for Santa Clara, sophomore Sofia Huerta led the Bronco offense with four shots, two of which were on target and Lauren Matheson also attempted two shots with one being on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Andi Tostanoski had a big game, collecting 11 saves. BYU outshot Santa Clara 22-9 and 11-6 in shots on goal. Jessica Ringwood had six shots for the Cougars and Jaiden Thornock had five.

Santa Clara will enjoy the rest of the weekend off and return to the field Fri., Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. vs. LMU at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The first Bronco shot came in the third minute off the foot of Huerta but she sent the ball high over the crossbar. Johnston got the first shot on goal for Santa Clara but Cougar goalkeeper Erica Owens made the save to keep the game scoreless. The Broncos had four corner kicks in the first half but could not make any of them count.

Neither team was able to break through in the first half. Santa Clara fired four shots and two shots on goal while BYU had two shots with one being on target. Tostanoski picked up one save in the first half and Owens had two.

The second half was controlled by BYU as the Cougars outshot Santa Clara 13-5. Tostanoski made five saves in the second half to help keep the Broncos tied. The best scoring chance came when Ringwood hit the post in the 70th minute and fired the rebound wide left.

The Cougars continued to control the game in both overtime periods but were unable to get a shot past Tostanoski and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
