SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Looking to spoil senior night for its opponent, No. 17 Santa Clara women's soccer fought to a 2-2 tie with San Francisco in double overtime. The tie puts the Broncos overall record at 9-3-5 and 2-1-2 in WCC play while the Dons move to 7-7-4 and 2-4-1 in conference.
The Broncos next play on Sun., Oct. 28 at 11:30 a.m. vs. San Diego as part of a doubleheader at Buck Shaw with men's soccer.
On offense, Paige Robertson and Allie Vernon scored the two Bronco goals with both goals being assisted by Sofia Huerta. Santa Clara continued its trend of outshooting its opponent as the team had a whopping 30 shots with 11 coming on goal while San Francisco had just eight total shots with four on goal.
Santa Clara jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Robertson. Huerta fired a cross into the box for Robertson who was able to knock her shot past the goalkeeper to put the Broncos on the board.
Huerta had a hand in the second Santa Clara goal of the evening as well. In the 31st minute Huerta sent a ball to Vernon near the top of the box and Vernon was able to find the back of the net to put Santa Clara up 2-0.
Just before halftime the Dons broke through to make the score 2-1. In the 45th minute, Rochelle Weerackoon took a pass from Kristen Vasquez and beat Bronco freshman goalkeeper Andi Tostanoksi for her third goal of the season.
The Dons struck again right out of halftime off the first goal of the season for Sydnie Telson. In the 47th minute Abigail Phillips took a ball and sent it into the box to Telson who got her head on the ball to even the score at 2-2.
Santa Clara maintained possession for much of the second half but neither team could find the goal again and the game went into overtime.
The Broncos had multiple chances to score in the second overtime but were unable to cash in. Julie Johnston took a ball in the middle of the box and headed it towards the goal but didn't square it up and the shot went wide.
The best chance for Santa Clara came in the 108th minute off the foot of Robertson. She got control of the ball on the left side of the box and took a few dribbles to line up her shot. Robertson attempted to hit a low shot to the right side of the goal but it went just wide and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
