Four Women's Soccer Players Earn All-West Region Nods

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Continuing to pick up accolades, Santa Clara women's soccer had three players named to the 2012 NCAA Division I Women All-West Region teams. U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year Julie Johnston was named to the first team, Allie Vernon and Sofia Huerta were named to the second team and Meleana Shim was named to the third team.

"Congratulations to all four of our players that were named to the All-West Region team," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "To have multiple players recognized is not only a credit to them, but the team as well. There are many great players in our region and these three are very deserving of the honor."

Johnston led the team with eight goals and 21 points and placed second with five assists. She scored three game-winning goals with one in overtime vs. CSU Northridge on September 21. Her 0.53 goals per game and 1.40 points per game were second in the WCC.

Huerta led the Broncos with six assists and was second in goals (6) and points (18) while playing in 17 games due to missing the first five while playing for Mexico in the U-20 World Cup. She led the conference in shots per game with 5.06.

Vernon, the 2009 Co-WCC Freshman of the Year, started all 22 games for the Broncos this year and played mostly out of the back. She scored her lone goal of the season on October 26 at San Francisco.

Shim, a senior captain in 2012, appeared in 19 games while making 18 starts. Shim scored three goals and added one assist. On October 28 vs. San Diego she scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute.
