Julie Johnston Named to First Full National Team Camp

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Standout Santa Clara women's soccer star Julie Johnston had a tremendous 2012 and things are getting even better in 2013. It was recently announced that Johnston has been named to her first full U.S. Soccer Women's National Team training camp. She will join 17of the 18 players that were part of the Olympic Gold Medal winning team from London last summer.

"It's a tremendous honor for Julie to be invited into the full National Team camp," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "These are the players that all of us watched win the Olympic gold medal this past summer. Only two collegians have been invited into this camp. One is Crystal Dunn who won the MAC Hermann Trophy as player of the year, and Julie. We've only had a handful of students go to the full National Team camp while they were at Santa Clara and had eligibility. Each of those players ended up playing in a World Cup and/or Olympic games. Julie has wonderful potential and everyone is recognizing that. She is joining a very exclusive group which is going to help her hopefully achieve her goal of playing in the World Cup or Olympic games."

Despite missing the team's first seven games while leading the U.S. to a U-20 World Cup victory as the squad's captain and winning the Bronze Ball, Johnston was a First-Team All-WCC selection while leading the team in goals with eight and points with 21. She added five assists while attempting 53 with 27 on goal. Johnston added three game-winning goals including one in overtime vs. CSU Northridge on Sept. 21. She finished second in the conference in goals per game (0.53) and points per game (1.40).
