Meet the Future of Santa Clara Women's Soccer: Whitney Cohen

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – With its long tradition of excellence, Santa Clara women's soccer is set to welcome a new class of freshmen to the Mission campus. SantaClaraBroncos.com will introduce one incoming player a day for the next eight days. The next player is Whitney Cohen of Arcadia, Calif. The complete list is below.

"I was able to picture myself attending Santa Clara within five minuets of stepping on the campus," said Cohen. "Each time I visited, I was exposed to the students' school spirit and the evident sense of community, one that exists throughout the entirety of the campus. I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of such an incredible soccer program and I look forward to joining the Bronco family."

"Whitney is a back player for us," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith, entering his 27th season leading the Broncos. "She'll most likely play center back but she can also play outside back. She is a very tactically aware player that anticipates very well. "

Cohen attended Flintridge Preparatory School in La Canada, Calif., and was coached by Esteban Chavez. Her high school team was the Prep League Champions in 2010, '11 and '12. The team made a CIF first round appearance in 2010 and '12 and made it to the quarterfinals in 2011.

Cohen's individual honors include First-Team All-League in 2010, Second-Team All-League in 2011 and '12, Team Defensive MVP, Southern California Div. III All-CIF First-Team and Pasadena Star News All-Area First-Team in 2012. She was also the team captain in 2012-13.

She played club soccer with Crown City United, Los Angeles Futbol Club and DC Golden State. FC Golden State was the Coast Soccer League Premier and 2012 League Cup Champions. Cohen was the club team captain in 2009-11 and was named Most Improved in 2011-12.

Cohen's parents are Robbin and Shannon and she has one sibling, Mallory. Her hobbies include country music, playing the guitar and photography. Cohen will be majoring in psychology and hopes to be working in the field of criminology.
