SANTA CLARA, Calif. – With its long tradition of excellence, Santa Clara women's soccer is set to welcome a new class of freshmen to the Mission campus. SantaClaraBroncos.com will introduce one incoming player a day for the next eight days. Next up is Mariana Galvan of San Jose, Calif. The complete list is below.
"Mariana Galvan will be a forward or attacking midfielder for us," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith, entering his 27th season leading the Broncos. "She'll be one of the more skillful and tactically aware players on our team. She reminds me of a former player who helped us win a national championship, Veronica Zepeda. They are cut from a very similar mold."
"I chose Santa Clara because the campus is great and the environment is surrounded by good people," said Galvan. "Also, the soccer program is very competitive and the coaches are flexible with the sport and have a lot of knowledge. I also chose Santa Clara because of my older sister,who is at SCU and she says it is a good fit for me. We share plenty of things in common. It is really close to my home so my parents can come to each of my home games. I fee like it is a perfect fit for me, not only for my interests, but also academically."
Galvan attended Woodside Priory in Portola Valley, Calif. and was coached by Henry Arredondo. She helped lead the team to CCS semi-finals and has been named All-State and league MVP. Galvan has also participated with the USA Youth National Team, State ODP and Regional ODP and is a Futsal National champion.
Galvan's parents are Julio Galvan and Erica Arreola and has four siblings; Keyra Galvan (19), Jocelyn (9), Carlos Sadoval (6) and Crystal Galvan (5). Her hobbies include hanging out with friends, surfing, riding bikes, helping others and laughing. Galvan will be majoring in psychology and hopes to become a professional athlete and be in the sports medicine field.
