Broncos Fall to No. 1 Tar Heels in Season-Opener

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Opening the season against the defending national champion and No. 1 team in the country for the second consecutive season, No. 16 Santa Clara women's soccer fell to No. 1 North Carolina by a final of 2-0. The loss puts the Broncos at 0-1-0 and the Tar Heels at 1-0-0.

Santa Clara next plays on Sun., Aug. 25 at 11:30 a.m. Pacific at No. 8 Virginia in the final game of the Klockner Classic.

The Broncos were outshot 17-5 and 8-3 in shots on goal. The Tar Heels also held the advantage in corner kicks 4-0.

Sofia Huerta had two shots on goals while Dani Weatherholt had one shot on goal. Morgan Marlborough and Brittany Ambrose also had one shot each. Goalkeeper Andi Tostanoski made six saves.

Crystal Dunn scored both goals for UNC while collecting four shots, all on goal. Kealia Ohai and Summer Green each had one assist and three shots. Bryane Heaberlin made three saves after coming in for Anna Sieloff to start the second half.

In the 50th minute Weatherholt fired a shot on goal but Heaberline made the save to keep the game scoreless. Eight minutes later, in the 58th minute, Huerta put a shot on goal with a header but Heaberline was able to make another save.

UNC broke through with a goal in the 59th minute to make the score 1-0. Ohai sent a pass to Dunn who scored from 12 yards out inside the near post. It was the first goal of the year for Dunn and the first assist of the year for Ohai.

Huerta was able to fire off another shot on goal in the 82nd minute but Heaberlin kept the shutout alive with her third save of the day.

Dunn answered with her second goal of the match in the 87th minute on an assist from Green to seemingly put the game away. Dunn fired from 15 years out and Tostanoski made the save the ball got away and rolled over the goal line.

North Carolina was able to finish out the game and get the 2-0 win. 

Game Notes: Santa Clara is now 2-14 all-time vs. North Carolina when the Tar Hells are No. 1 … The last win for Santa Clara over a No. 1 team was Nov. 20, 2004 at North Carolina 1-0 in overtime … The Broncos are 2-24-1 all-time vs. No. 1 teams … Four Santa Clara players made their collegiate debuts (Jordan Jesolva, Jenna Roering, Julie Vass, and Morgan Brown) while Morgan Marlborough made her Bronco debut.
