Catching up with Fifth Year Senior Allie Vernon

Catching up with Fifth Year Senior Allie Vernon

Written by James LeClercq

Allie Vernon and her team have come a long way since her first season just five years ago. She started her collegiate career with a four-win season and has watched it grow to a Final Four caliber team. Playing a fifth year due to injury early in her career, she is becoming a stronger asset on offense and a bigger leader on and off the field.

SCU: How was your summer? And what did you do to stay in shape for the season?

AV: My summer was great. I went back home to Chicago where I hung out with family and friends. There are so many exciting things to do in the city during the summer time so it is always nice to get some time to enjoy it.  To stay in shape for the season I usually do a combination of lifting, running (agility and tempo running), skill work with ball and most importantly rest/relax.

SCU: Are you happy with the overall play of your team thus far this season?

AV: I'm very happy with the overall play of our team. After a tough start to the season, we have really worked hard to come together as a team and improve on our weaknesses and chemistry as a group.  This team has a very great opportunity to do amazing things this season and I am very excited to be apart of it.

SCU: You are a Public Health Science Major. What are your future aspirations in that field?

AV: After receiving my degree in Public Health Science, I look forward to getting my doctorate in Physical Therapy. I am very interested in the way our bodies function and recovery from daily stress and injury. I have a passion for helping people improve their overall wellness.

SCU: How was your journey bouncing back from your injury sophomore year?

AV: Any injury takes a physical, emotional, and mental toll but when you are surrounded by the right people and have a positive attitude it's an easier journey than people think. I was very lucky to have so many supportive people in my life. My parents, teammates and coaches were there with me every step of the way.

SCU: How long have you been playing soccer?

AV: I've been playing soccer for a long time. I think I started when I was six or seven, so about 16 years. I did ballet before I played soccer and that did not stick very well.

SCU: Since this is your senior year, what are your personal/team goals for your final season as a Bronco?

AV: My main goal this year is to stay in the moment. It's my last season and I really want to enjoy playing soccer with my teammates. Before I know it, my career at Santa Clara will be done, so I want to make it last as long as possible.
