Julie Johnston Named West Coast Conference Player of the Week

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Helping lead the Broncos to a 2-0-0 start in West Coast Conference action, Julie Johnston of women's soccer was named the WCC Player of the Week for Oct. 14.

"I am really honored to be Player of the Week, but this weekend was definitely a team effort and we got two great conference wins because of how well we played together," said Johnston. "Going into conference I knew I needed to step up and give all I have for this team."

"Julie is one of the top-five players in college soccer and has been great for us all season long," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "She's played all over the field for us so she's not going to have the goals and assists that someone who plays on the front line will get. If there were a category for most complete player week in and week out, Julie would probably get recognized every week. We have to really enjoy and appreciate what a quality player she is because she won't be here much longer. As coaches, we celebrate what she does everyday so it's nice to see her get some conference recognition."

On Thursday Johnston scored the lone goal in a 1-0 Santa Clara win over San Diego. In a 2-1 win against No. 22 BYU on Saturday, Johnston had a beautiful assist on Sofia Huerta's goal to tie the game at 1-1 in the 40th minute.

The Broncos return to the field on Fri., Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. at Saint Mary's.
