Women's Soccer Blasts Saint Mary's 4-0 on the Road Behind Huge First Half

MORAGA, Calif. – Playing its first road game in over a month, No. 14 Santa Clara women's soccer topped Saint Mary's by a final of 4-0. The win puts the Broncos at 9-3-1 and 3-0-0 in WCC action while the Gaels are now 5-9-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play.

Santa Clara returns to the field on Sun., Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. at Pacific.

The Broncos outshot Saint Mary's 18-7 and 10-2 in shots on goal. They also picked up eight corner kicks to the Gaels' one. Julie Johnston led the way on offense with two goals scored while Sofia Huerta and Dani Weatherholt each added one goal. Sarah Jackson and Alyssa Kleiner each had two assists while Megan Crosson had one. Andi Tostanoski made two saves in net for Santa Clara.

Santa Clara scored first in the 11th minute off the head of Johnston. Jackson sent a pass six yards out that Johnston was able to get her head on and find the back of the net. The goal gave the Broncos the early 1-0 lead.

Huerta pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute. Kleiner passed the ball from the right side of the box to Huerta who put it away in the left corner of the net.

In the 32nd minute Johnston scored her second goal of the game, and ninth of the season, to pad the Santa Clara lead. Jackson sent a ball to Kleiner who crossed it into the box. Johnston was able to chip it in to extend the lead to 3-0.

Just before the end of the first half, in the 45th minute, Santa Clara scored again to make the score 4-0. Crosson crossed the ball into the box and Weatherholt knocked it in from 10 yards out.

Santa Clara started to take out the regulars early in the second half and neither team was able to score, giving the Broncos the 4-0 win.
