Seven Women's Soccer Players Recognized by WCC for Academic Success

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Proving their dominance on the field with a No. 8 national ranking, seven Santa Clara women's soccer players were honored for their work in the classroom as members of the 2013 West Coast Conference All-Academic Team. Senior Morgan Marlborough and redshirt freshman Julie Vass were named to the All-Academic Team while Cali Reis, Ellie Rice, Paige Robertson, Katie Speidel, and Dani Weatherholt were honorable mention. The seven honorees were tied with Portland for the most on the list by one school.

"We are very proud of our seven student-athletes who were honored," said Santa Clara head coach. "The goal of a student-athlete is to succeed on the field and in the classroom. These seven have helped us achieve success in both venues this season."

Marlborough has a 3.401 GPA in Liberal Studies. Marlborough is second on the Broncos with 11 goals, five assists and 27 points. She has recorded three hat tricks in 2013 and has been WCC Player of the Week twice. 

Vass maintains a 3.945 GPA in Mathematics. Vass has appeared in all 17 Santa Clara games while picking up three assists and providing stability in the midfield. 

Reis has a 3.393 GPA in Psychology. Reis has played in 11 games for the Broncos and has played an important role on the back line of the stingy Santa Clara defense. 

Rice has a 3.443 GPA in Psychology. Rice has played 15 games in 2013 while scoring a goal and adding two assists. She has helped anchor a defense that has allowed just 16 goals all season. 

Robertson has a 3.616 GPA in Accounting. Robertson has played in 14 games and attempted six shots with two on goal. She has played all over the field as a key player off the bench.

Speidel has a 3.345 GPA in Political Science. Speidel has scored one goal on the season but it was one of the biggest of the year. She scored the game-winner vs. BYU in Santa Clara's 2-1 victory.

Weatherholt has a 3.367 GPA in Liberal Studies. Weatherholt has scored two goals in 2013 while playing in 17 games. She has been a fixture in the midfield for the Broncos this season.
