SANTA CLARA, Calif. – For the third season in a row Julie Johnston of Santa Clara women's soccer has been named a semi-finalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. Previous Bronco winners of the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy include Mandy Clemens in 1999 and Aly Wagner in 2002. Fans can begin voting Dec. 5 here.
"It's always great to be honored," said Johnston. "It means a lot to be on a list with such amazing players. It feels amazing to be recognized for all of the hard work you put in. Santa Clara has allowed me to exceed my expectations both on and off the field."
"I'm very happy for Julie and she's very deserving of being on the semifinalist list for the Hermann Award," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "I have no doubt that she'll be a finalist when that time comes. Julie has been one of the most incredible collegiate players the last few years and is one of the few collegians that already plays with our senior national team. She had a phenomenal season for us and is one of the most complete players. Against Cal she played on all three lines for us and I don't know how many college players can do that effectively. We're thrilled for her and wish her the best in the upcoming voting."
Johnston was named the WCC Player of the Year as well as First Team All-WCC and College Sports Madness' WCC Player of the Year. Johnston led the Broncos with eight assists and four game-winning goals. She finished third on the team with 12 goals and 32 points.
The M.A.C. Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer. The recipients are selected by head coaches of NCAA Division I programs who are members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Three finalists for the award will be announced and will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis for a news conference on Fri., Jan. 11, 2013, where the winner will be announced. A dinner and presentation of the award will follow the news conference that evening.
