Early Goal Sinks Women's Soccer at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – In the first road game of the year, No. 24 Santa Clara women's soccer fell to No. 11 Cal by a final of 1-0. The loss puts the Broncos at 4-3-0 on the season while the Bears are 7-1-0.

Santa Clara returns to the field Fri., Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at No. 4 Stanford.

Santa Clara was outshot by Cal 9-8 and shots on goal were 5-2 in favor of the Bears. Sofia Huerta led the way for the Bronco offense with four shots and two on goal. Andi Tostanoski picked up four saves in net.

Cal took the quick 1-0 lead in the sixth minute off the foot of Grace Leer. Celeste Boureille sent a pass to the right side of the field to Leer who finished into the left side of the net for her third goal of the season.

The Bears continued the offensive pressure early in the first half, forcing Tostanoski to make two more saves. Huerta had the first Bronco shot on goal in the 31st minute but Emily Boyd came up with the save.

Santa Clara outshot Cal 5-4 and shots on goal were 4-2 in favor of the Bears in the first half. Huerta led the way for the Bronco offense with four shots and two on goal while Tostanoski picked up three saves in net.

Jordan Jesolva and Ashley Doyle both had shots in the span of five seconds in the 53rd minute but the Cal defense was able to block both attempts.

In the span of three and a half minutes midway through the second half Cal got three shots and a corner kick but were unable to add to the lead.

With the final seconds of the game winding down, Nikki Ambrose took a shot from outside the box that went just over the diving goalkeeper but was wide. The clock expired with Cal holding on for the 1-0 win.
