PALO ALTO, Calif. – Playing its second consecutive ranked opponent, Santa Clara women's soccer fell to No. 4 Stanford by a final of 3-0. The loss puts the Broncos at 4-4-0 on the season while the Cardinal are 7-0-1.
Santa Clara returns to the field Sun., Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. vs. UC Davis. There will be fireworks at the game to celebrate the return of SCU students.
Santa Clara was outshot by Stanford 23-5 and shots on goal were 11-2 in favor of the Cardinal. Sofia Huerta and Jordan Jesolva led the way for the Bronco offense with two shots and one on goal each. Andi Tostanoski picked up six saves in net. Emily Johnson played the final eight-plus minutes for her Bronco debut and made two saves.
Tostanoski made a beautiful save in the 27th minute. Lo'eau LaBonta fired a shot that Tostanoski had to time a jump to knock over the cross bar. Stanford almost scored on the ensuing corner kick but Tostanoski dove on the loose ball to keep the game scoreless.
The Cardinal broke through in the 33rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Mariah Lee passed to Ryan Walker-Hartshorn who was right in front of the goal and was able to put the ball in the back of the net.
Santa Clara was outshot by Stanford 11-4 and shots on goal were 5-2 in favor of the Cardinal in the first half. Huerta and Jesolva led the way for the Bronco offense with two shots each. Andi Tostanoski picked up four saves in net.
Off of a corner kick in the 52nd minute Stanford extended its lead to 2-0. Andi Sullivan took a corner kick from the left side of the field and sent it to Stephanie Amack at the right side of the six-yard box. Amack connected and slid the ball into the left side of the net.
In the 59th minute the Cardinal struck again on a defensive miscue by the Broncos. A long pass by Amack was misplayed by the defense and Walker-Hartshorn got the ball one-on-one with Tostanoski. She finished to the right side of the goal to make it 3-0.
