Freshmen Lead the Way in Opener at Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – In the season opener, Santa Clara women's soccer topped UC Davis by a final of 2-0. The win puts the Broncos at 1-0-0 on the season while the Aggies are 0-1-0.

Santa Clara returns to the field Sun., Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. at Arizona.

Santa Clara outshot UC Davis 11-9 and shots on goal were 6-4 in favor of UC Davis. Freshmen Grace Cutler and Janae Gonzalez each scored their first career goals to lead the Bronco offense. Andi Tostanoski and Megan Crosson each picked up an assist. Tostanoski had up six saves in net.

The Broncos scored first in the 13th minute. Cutler, in her first collegiate game, took a pass from Tostanoski and one-timed a shot from three yards out that beat the keeper in the upper right of the goal. The goal gave Santa Clara the early 1-0 lead.

Santa Clara outshot UC Davis 6-4 in the first half and shots on goal were 2-2.

Davis had its best scoring chance of the night in the 73rd minute. Crystal Crump had her shot hit the post to keep Santa Clara on top by one.

Santa Clara added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute. Gonzalez, also in her first career game, took a pass from Crosson and used the back of her heel to create room for her shot that made it 2-0.
