Early Goal Not Enough as Broncos Fall at Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – Despite scoring right out of the chute, Santa Clara women's soccer fell to Arizona by a final of 2-1. The loss puts the Broncos at 1-1-0 on the season while the Wildcats are 2-0-0.

Santa Clara returns to the field Fri., Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. at Notre Dame in the first game of the Notre Dame Invitational.

Santa Clara was outshot by Arizona 15-9 and shots on goal were 7-5 in favor of Arizona. Jenna Holtz led the Bronco offense with the lone goal. Andi Tostanoski picked up five saves in net.

The Broncos struck in the second minute to go out on top 1-0. Holtz got control of the ball and created space in the box before finishing from 15 yards out to the left side of the net. It was the first goal of Holtz's collegiate career.

In the 35th minute the Wildcats tied the game on a penalty kick. Gabi Stoian took the try and finished to the right side of the net.

Santa Clara was outshot by Arizona 6-3 in the first half and shots on goal were 2-1 in favor of the Wildcats.

Santa Clara got a penalty kick of their own in the 63rd minute when Grace Cutler was taken down in the box. Holtz took the shot but hit the right post and the game remained tied at one.

In the 68th minute Arizona took advantage of a run and took a 2-1 lead. Cece Bilginer took a pass on the ground and one-timed a shot to the lower right of the goal. Tostanoski was able to get a piece of it but the ball still found the back of the net.
