Broncos Take Down Northwestern 1-0

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Looking to get back in the win column, Santa Clara women's soccer beat Northwestern by a final of 1-0. The win puts the Broncos at 2-2-0 on the season while the Wildcats are 3-1-0.

Santa Clara returns to the field Fri., Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. at Kansas.

"I'm happy with the victory today," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "I'm also happy that we got 20 players into the game today to get some experience. The team bounced back well in the fourth game in a row on the road and after playing a tough Notre Dame team. It was great to have a shutout and the team is in a good spot. We're moving the ball well and continuing to improve. We used a different formation for the first time today and it worked well so it may be something we can build on. There were a lot of positives this weekend and I'm very proud of the team."

Santa Clara and Northwestern each had eight shots and shots on goal were 6-2 in favor of the Wildcats. Julie Vass led the Bronco offense with a goal while Jenna Roering picked up the assist. Andi Tostanoski continued her great weekend and picked up six saves in net.

"Jenna Roering had a great weekend for us," said Smith. "After scoring for us Friday, she came back with an assist today. It was good to see her name on the score sheet a couple times. Andi Tostanoski also had a great weekend for us with some incredible saves. We were also able to get Jordan Jesolva back on the field. We're going to build her minutes up and get her back to where she can play the whole game."

The lone goal of the game came in the 23rd minute off the foot of Vass. Roering sent a ball to Vass seven yards out and she one-timed her shot inside the left post to make it 1-0. It was the first goal of the year for Vass.
